The crude residue was purified using biotage parallel column purifier using ethyl acetate in petroleum ether (4:1) to 4-6percent methanol in dichloromethane as eluant. The resulting mixture was stirred at 65°C for 16 hours. The mixture was cooled to room temperature, fltered and the solvents evaporated to give crude product. The crude product was purified by flash silica chromatography, elution gradient 0 to 8percent MeOH in DCM. Pure fractions were evaporated to dryness to give 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)-l-methylpiperazin-2-one (1.870 g, 75.0percent).
