High-performance nanofiltration membrane with structurally controlled PES substrate containing electrically aligned CNTs

A structurally controlled polyethersulfone (PES) membrane, as the substrate of the thin film composite nanofiltration (NF) membranes, was designed and fabricated with aligned carbon nanotubes (ACNTs) by a direct current electric field. The morphology and properties of the NF membranes were simultaneously affected by the PES substrate with especial macrovoids and ACNTs, increasing the permeability from 6.4 to 29.7 L/m(2) h bar. It was confirmed by FT-IR and XPS that the poly(piperazine amide) selective layer of the modified NF membrane has an increased content of -COOH for enhanced hydrophilicity. The zeta potential proves that the surface of the NF membrane modified by electric field has weaker negative charge than that of unmodified membrane in the range of pH = 5-9. Under the combined action of the Donnan effect and size exclusion, the rejection of MgCl2 increased while maintaining the dianion rejection above 95%. Particularly, the NF membrane modified with ACNTs exhibited better chlorine resistance and antifouling ability, thus improving the stability and perdurability of membranes. Our work utilizes the characteristics of ACNTs to explore its potential in NF membranes.

A highly sensitive biosensor with a single-copy evolved sensing cassette for chlorpyrifos pesticide detection

An Efficient Solid-Liquid Biphasic Solvent for CO2 Capture: Crystalline Powder Product and Low Heat Duty

A nonaqueous, phase-change absorbent of 2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol (AMP)/piperazine (PZ) and environmentally friendly solvent dipropylene glycol dimethyl ether (DME) fixes a number of issues suffered by a solid-liquid biphasic solvent, such as high viscosity of the saturated solution and difficult separation and regeneration of the viscous solid. The solid phase occupies 43% of the total volume while attributes about 94% of the total loading (0.87 mol mol(-1)) of the solution. Beside the formation of AMP-carbamate and PZ-carbamate according to zwitterions mechanism, the coupling products of AMP/PZ-carbamate are also found in the crystal, which helps to reduce the desorption temperature during the regeneration. Because of low solubility, self-aggregation, and high lattice energy in DME, the CO2 products precipitate and form a white crystalline powder in the lower phase of the solution. Meanwhile, the solid precipitation helps the bulk solution to keep a lower partial pressure and higher diffusivity of CO2, conforming a perfect performance of CO2 capture into the biphasic solvent. The regeneration heat duty of the solvent (1.61 GJ t(-1) CO2) was approximately 57% less than that of the benchmark monoethanolamine (MEA) because of its perfect performance on CO2 capture, such as high absorption loading, high regeneration efficiency, and low amount of rich phase required for regeneration. The novel absorbent has a great potential for green and sustainable CO2 capture.

High-performance zwitterionic TFC polyamide nanofiltration membrane based on a novel triamine precursor

As known, piperazine (PIP) and m-phenylenediamine (MPD) are popularly employed as aqueous monomer to interfacially polymerize with trimesoyl chloride (TMC) for the fabrication of TFC polyamide NF and RO membrane, respectively. In this work, we designed a novel amine monomer 4-(piperazin-1-yl)benzene-1,3-diamine (PMPD) having the combined PIP and MPD units in one molecule and employing it with TMC to prepare the pristine nanofiltration membrane. Subsequently, zwitterionic antifouling PA surface was constructed by modification with 3-bromopropionic acid (3-BPA). The resulting membrane (PMPD-PA) exhibited a smoother surface with enhanced surface hydrophilicity than the membrane made from MPD, and the thickness of the PA active layer was down to similar to 35 nm. Meanwhile, its pure water permeability was-19 L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1), with Na2SO4 rejection of 98.4%, and NaCl rejection as low as 24.1%, performing as a novel selective NF membrane. Furthermore, fouling tests using model foulants BSA and SA well illustrated the good antifouling properties of membrane PMPD-PA with the mitigated flux decline and enhanced flux recovery upon physical cleaning. Thus, this work further demonstrates the fabrication of high-performance TFC NF membrane from the perspective of molecular design.

Application of diazonium-induced anchoring process on ultrafiltration substrate for the fabrication of nanofiltration membrane with enhanced desalination performance

In membrane process, the lateral transport path of water molecule through substrate has a great impact on the permeance of thin-film composite (TFC) membrane, thus the optimization of substrate by constructing interlayer without affecting its pore structure is desired. Here, we report a facile, scalable and universal surface grafting strategy based on a diazonium-induced anchoring process (DIAP), for which an ultra-thin polyaminophenylene (PAP)-like layer is covalently grafted on the substrate. The PAP-like layer significantly increases the wettability of surface and pore as well as surface positive charges of substrate, but has little infiuence on its surface pore size and structure. Moreover, the effects of the anchored PAP-like layer on the distribution, release and uptake of piperazine (PIP) monomers during interfacial polymerization (IP) process are investigated systematically. The polyamide (PA) nanofiltration (NF) membrane made on this substrate features a highly cross-linked, thinner and smoother PA layer with less PA invasive, and highlights a 2-fold water fiux increase and simultaneously enhanced divalent salts (Na2SO4, MgSO4 and MgCl2) rejections (above 98.0%). Thus, combined with the superior structural stability and antifouling property, the obtained TFC membrane holds great potential in water soft ening and household water purification.

Spirocyclic Nitroxide Biradicals: Synthesis and Evaluation as Dynamic Nuclear Polarizing Agents

A method for the synthesis of rigid nitroxide biradicals with various spatial orientations between the radical centers is reported. Diketones were employed as substrates for tin amine protocol (SnAP) reagents to provide the parent spirocyclic diamines. Oxidation by peroxyacids provided the corresponding nitroxide biradicals. A set of four different biradicals with various interelectron distances and torsion angles between the radical planes was synthesized using this method. The exact geometries were determined by X-ray crystallography and the biradicals were investigated by EPR spectroscopy and evaluated for their dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP) performance. H-1-DNP enhancements in the range of 1.2-2.1 at 14.1 Tesla (600 MHz spectrometer) were achieved. This synthetic methodology opens a promising alternative to access nitroxide biradicals with various torsional angles and inter radical distances.

Graphene oxide/multi-walled carbon nanotubes nanocompsite polyamide nanofiltration membrane for dyeing-printing wastewater treatment

Graphene oxide (GO)/multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) modified nanofiltration (NF) membranes were successfully fabricated by interfacial polymerization of piperazine (PIP) and 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyl trichloride (TMC). Compared with the pristine polyamide (PA) membrane and GO membrane, the typical structure of the granular protrusions on the surface of the GO/MWCNTs membrane gradually disappeared, and a regular ordered morphology appeared. The membrane thickness and surface roughness were increased according to the results of field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The contact angle of GO/MWCNTs NF membranes progressively decreased from 57 degrees to 23 degrees, indicating the enhancement of surface hydrophilicity. The best NF performance was achieved when the ratio of GO to MWCNTs was 6:3 (G-M-3). The water flux was 55.6 L/m(2).h, which was 33.7% higher than that of the GO membrane, and the rejection rate for Na(2)SO(4)was maintained at approximately 94%. Both modified NF membranes could treat actual dyeing-printing wastewater effectively. The anti-fouling performance of G-M-3 was better than that of G3. Therefore, GO/MWCNTs-modified NF membranes have a good application prospects in the field of wastewater treatment and water purification.

Immobilized piperazine on the surface of graphene oxide (piperazine-GO) is synthesized and characterized by different methods such as FT-IR, solid-state(29)Si{H-1} and(13)C{H-1} CP/MAS NMR, elemental analysis, TGA, TEM, FE-SEM, XPS, and TPD. Subsequently, it is used as a heterogeneous bifunctional acid-base catalyst for the efficient multicomponent reaction of malononitrile, different active compounds containing enolizable C-H bonds and various aryl/alkyl aldehydes in aqueous ethanol. A wide variety of 2-amino-3-cyano-4H-chromenes are synthesized in the presence of this heterogeneous catalyst in good to high yields and with short reaction times. The catalyst is easily separated and reused for at least six times without significant loss of activity. The acidic nature of GO improves the catalytic activity of the supported piperazine and also provides heterogeneity to the catalyst. Use of aqueous ethanol as a green solvent, high turnover numbers (TON), facile catalyst recovery and reuse, simple work-up and generality of the method make this protocol an environmentally benign procedure for the synthesis of the title heterocycles.

Enhanced research of absorption by mass transfer promoters

Activators such as piperazine (PZ) are widely used to increase the CO2 absorption rate of aqueous methyl-diethanolamine (MDEA) solutions by accelerating reaction. However, a big difference (1 to 2 orders of magnitude) in the enhancement of absorption rate with the addition of PZ was obtained in different studies. In this work, it was proved that mass transfer is the rate-limiting step in the above process and in most cases enhancing mass transfer is quite essential. Some low-polar solvents were screened as mass transfer promoters (MTPs) to enhance mass transfer by inducing interfacial turbulence, which markedly improved the CO2 absorption performance of MDEA solutions. The individual addition of PZ and MTPs to the MDEA solution, which correspond to the reaction enhancement and the mass transfer enhancement, increased the absorption rate by 131% and 33%-319%, respectively. The co-effects of enhancing both reaction and mass transfer (in the presence of activators and MTPs) can lead to 2 to 10-fold increase in the absorption rate. Furthermore, MTPs could increase the CO2 cyclic loading and desorption rate by 27% and 100%, respectively, indicating that the MDEA/MTPs had significant advantages for reducing the energy consumption in CO2 capture applications.

Graphene oxide interlayered thin-film nanocomposite hollow fiber nanofiltration membranes with enhanced aqueous electrolyte separation performance

In this study, a kind of thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) hollow fiber nanofiltration (NF) membranes was fabricated via incorporating graphene oxide (GO) interlayer using the interfacial polymerization (IP) reaction between piperazine (PIP) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC). The surface morphology and cross-sectional structure of the fabricated TFN hollow fiber NF membrane were extensively investigated. The effects of the PIP concentration, species of the aqueous additives, and the GO loading on the structure and performance of the hollow fiber NF membrane were also investigated in detail and the optimal preparation conditions were achieved. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the successful introduction of the GO interlayer into the composite hollow fiber NF membrane. Moreover, the incorporation of GO interlayer helped to reduce the skin thickness of the composite hollow fiber NF membrane remarkably, and thus helped to increase greatly the water permeance while maintaining a high salt rejection. Under an optimal GO loading of 20.0 mg m(-2), the TFN hollow fiber NF membrane achieved a water permeance of 80 L m(-2) h(-1) MPa-1 and a Na2SO4 rejection of 96.1% for 2000 mg L-1 aqueous Na2SO4 solution, much higher than the interlayer-free thin-film composite (TFC) membrane. Meanwhile, the TFN hollow fiber NF membrane showed an excellent selectivity of Na2SO4 over NaCl, as well as good fouling resistance and long-term stability, demonstrating the vast potential in application for the selective separation of monovalent salt and divalent salt.
