The reaction mixture was added to water and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with brine and dried. The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography to give 1-tert-.butoxycarbonyl-4-(4-nitrophenyl)aminopiperidine (2.55 g) as a white solid.
