The mixture is concentrated in vacuo, 20 ml of water are added, the pH is brought to 5 with 2N hydrochloric acid and the precipitate which separates out is recrystallized from methanol. 0.6 g (16% of theory) of 8-chloro-1-cyclopropyl-6-fluoro-1,4-dihydro-7-(3-methyl-1-piperazinyl)-4-oxo-3-quinolinecarboxylic acid of melting point 318-325 C. (with decomposition) is obtained.
